Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation triggered by a combination of genetics, hormonal shifts (like pregnancy or birth control), and UV exposure. Unlike sunspots, melasma is "melanocyte hyperactivity"—your pigment-producing cells are overreacting and pumping out too much melanin, often in symmetrical patches on the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip.
Yes, but you must be vigilant. Melasma is extremely heat- and light-sensitive. Even five minutes of unprotected sun exposure can "wake up" the pigment cells and undo weeks of treatment. If you are using a prescription lightener, you must wear a mineral sunscreen (look for Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide) every single day, even indoors.
Melasma often requires a "triple-threat" approach. We typically combine a tyrosinase inhibitor (like Hydroquinone) to stop pigment production, a retinoid to shed existing pigmented cells, and a mild steroid to calm inflammation. For those who can't use Hydroquinone, we pivot to alternatives like Tranexamic Acid or Kojic Acid.
Melasma is a chronic, "manageable but not curable" condition. Because the underlying cells are primed to overproduce pigment, it can return if triggered by hormones or the sun. Most patients use a "cycling" approach: three months of intensive treatment followed by a "maintenance" break to keep the skin healthy and prevent rebound darkening.
Some temporary darkening can occur if the skin becomes irritated. This is why we focus on anti-inflammatory ingredients. If the skin gets too red or "hot," it can trigger Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) on top of the melasma. If you notice a "halo" effect or sudden darkening, we recommend pausing the active and focusing on barrier repair.
