7 Tips to Combat Dry Winter Skin

Harsh winter weather and dry air can cause dry, itchy skin. The right routine and a few changes to your routine and products can leave glowing all season long. The key is to look for products that have proven, dermatologist-tested ingredients, and use them correctly and consistently.

Here are 7 of our top tips on how to combat your dry winter skin.

1. Skip the long hot showers

Nothing seems better than a hot shower or bath on a cold winter day, but hot water is the enemy of dry winter skin. To make your shower moisturizing, swap soaps for body cleansing oils. Our favorite is the Bioderma Shower Oil which invigorates dry skin to reveal a luxurious silky-smooth feel.

Apply your body moisturizer on damp skin, we recommend leaving it in the shower so you can apply it before you step out.

2. Use a thicker moisturizer

One of the most overlooked steps in the winter is switching to a thicker hydrating moisturizer. Look for moisturizers with ingredients such as skin-smoothing ceramides and hyaluronic acid. For very dry skin, apply your moisturizer morning and night.

Drunk Elephants Lala Whipped Retro cream is a great option, it rescues dry dull skin while slowly delivering moisture throughout the day and night. The Hungarian Thermal moisturizer by Peter Thomas Roth harnesses moisture along with a triple lipid complex to nourish and restore the appearance of your skin. The name makes you want to drink it, so does your skin!

3. Avoid Harsh Cleansers

Avoid facial cleansers with drying ingredients such as additives and fragrances which can strip your skin of its natural oils. Choose a mild and soothing face wash like the Bioderma Sensibio cleansing foaming gel. Formulated with nourishing vitamin E, this foamy face wash is the perfect cleanser for the winter.

4. Drink up!

Drinking water (and a lot of it) is important year-round, treating your skin during drier winter months means paying attention to hydration, inside and out. Stick to 8-10 glasses of water per day and avoid excessive caffeine or alco

5. Choose an Antioxidant Serum

Serums are one of the products you should use year-round. Serums with Vitamin C are effective in brightening dull skin and preventing damage from environmental stressors and free radical damage. The Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is a great day time serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens skin complexion. The hyaluronic acid-based Phyto-C O-live Gel immediately reinforces natural skin hydration, hydrates, and moisturizers, and soothes dry, irritated skin.

6. Wear a hydrating sunscreen

Colder temperatures don’t mean you should throw your sunscreen away. Choose an ultra-moisturizing sunscreen like the SkinKure moisturizing mineral SPF 50. This sunscreen provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection from harmful UV rays while locking in moisture and caffeine to soothe and calm the skin.

7. Take your evening self-care to the next level.

Feeling parched? During the dead of winter, the elements don’t always play well with our skin. Use a hydrating sheet mask once a week at bedtime. Avoid masks with ingredients such as charcoal and clay while opting for masks with hyaluronic acid. We love the Patchology 5 Minute Sheet Mask, which is ideal for fatigued and dehydrated skin.

End your evening by coating your hands with a thick moisturizer. Crafted with ultra-moisturizing agents, the Bioderma Atoderm Hand and Nail cream leave you with noticeably soft and supple skin.
