Acne Scars Treatment

Acne scars can be red, brown, white, depressed or elevated marks on the skin. They arise from acne or picking of the acne. Some people are more prone to getting acne scars and they often take 3-6 months to clear. The underlying acne must first be treated before the acne scars will resolve.

Doctor's Tips

Doctors recommendations are to cleanse no more than once a day with a gentle, non-lathering cleanser. In the morning rinse skin with water only. Apply the AM medication followed by a hydrating moisturizer and a broad spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen. In the evening, cleanse with a non-lathering cream or oil based cleanser, pat dry, apply the PM medication all over the face and then apply a deeply hydrating moisturizer on top. Always use SPF as the last step in your regimen.

Product Details

Your prescription includes a morning and night treatment with anti-inflammatory and skin lightening agents to decrease the appearance of acne scars the skin. Often this takes 3-6 months to see results. In the morning gently cleanse the skin and pat dry. Apply your AM medication in the area with acne scars. In the evening use a gentle cleanser, pat dry and apply the PM medication. Don't forget to apply moisturizer on top both AM and PM as these medications can cause dryness of the skin. Do not mix these medications with any additional toners, acids, exfoliants or retinols. If redness, dryness, or irritation appears, stop using. If your skin is sensitive, only use medications every other day.

Doctor's Tip

Acne scars are the result of inflammation of the skin around the area of acne. Medications that lighten the skin can cause redness, dryness or irritation if used in large amounts or if used too much. Start by using these medications every other night, if irritation doesn't appear after 1-2 weeks then titrate up to using every night. Sun avoidance and sun protection are essential. If a sunscreen is not used with broad spectrum SPF 50+, the acne scars may not improve. Apply sunscreen every two hours and wear a hat if you are in the sun. Recommended skin care also includes a serum with Vitamin C in the morning, a gentle brightening cleanser and as always a hydrating moisturizer.
